Today there is an interesting to learn on how to create users. In openSUSE, normally we can create a user easily by using Yast and if you prefer to experience with command you can also use two commands to have a proper user with:

#useradd -m newuser
#passwd newuser

The second command will prompt you to enter new password of user. Then you can log in both graphic and text mode.
On the other way if you know how things work you can also do it manually. When you type useradd it will write the new user data into /etc/passwd and with -m of the command it copy folder skel from /etc/skel into /home and then rename it with the name of new user created. After that change ownership of the folder into the new one. So how to do this?

- Log in as root

>su
———————————————
- Type root’s password

———————————————
#vi /etc/passwd
———————————————

- enter the newline of a new user to create with similar fields of existing user example

- newuser:x:1008:100::/home/newuser:/bin/bash

- then save it by pressing esc, type : x

- After leave vi you have to copy the directory skel into /home

———————————–
#cp -r /etc/skel /home
———————————–

- rename folder skel to the username

———————————————-
#mv skel newuser
———————————————-

- Change ownership and group membership of the directory

———————————————–
#chown -R newuser.users newuser /home/newuser
———————————————–

- Add password to the user

———————————————-
#passwd newuser
———————————————-
- Type password for newuser

- Log out

- Log in with the new user and password

Congratulation you can create user!

To help developing Cambodian use ICT as a tool for improving life condition in working and living, MoEYS and OI, has signed a contract on Open School program to put all high school students learn computer, but the problem in Cambodia is the lack of electricity and government budget for education. To archive this the program has to learn the computer that consume low power electricity, so we have bough a very small computer box which is equal to cd-rom size from Taiwan to study if it support Khmer Linux Operating system, openSUSE. We also bought small motherboards to setup the computer by ourself but I am not the person to buy and to setup the computers I just help to see if it’s work with Linux or not.
Well, some computer that we bought motherboard to setup can work with Linux but some can’t so we have to setup openSUSE 10.1. And the one that is equal to cd-rom size can but it’s not work with 19 inches flat screen monitor.

Thank beth for granting this small box computer to OI to let me have chance to study more about Linux. Zonbu is a very small box computer that can be used as a terminal in client/server network. Its storage is just a small 4GB SD card with Linux Zonbu OS and GNOME desktop. If we want to used it we have to buy online storage space but required large bandwidth internet connection. For such a small contry like Cambodia, it’s a bit difficult to used such modern technology, so we, Bart, Javier and I, play with it almost the whole week by backup its Zonbu OS and take the card to install openSUSE. First we see no other device in BIOS that can be booted from, so we take the card to connect with our desktop and Install it but we have to install boot loader, it’s very complex. Finally we found that we can boot from CD-ROM, then we finish installing openSUSE

I don’t know should I call this as my first presentation about Free and Open Source (FOSS) while I was at Malaysia I used to do presentation in Master of Trainer workshop prepared by AOSS with the topic of System Administration that I and my Malaysian LPI trainer, Khairil Yusof, met each other again after we had met at Philippines in the LPI training of trainer workshop. There it seem I feel normal because I know most of the participants come from and who they are. And I feel a bit warm because I have some friends there that I just knew during the workshop especially Khairil that encouraged me to do presentation and always give good advice to me. I can say that when I meet him I feel hopefully, because he talk and motivate me many thing related to FOSS, is this because he is a consultant?
But at that time I also dedicate my special thank to Nurhizam Safie Bin Mohd Satar who is one of organizers of Master Trainer workshop. During my stay at Malaysia his family took care of me very much, and I am very happy to see the happiness of his family of 4 people with two lovely daughters. I knew that they are a happy family by talking to the couple and living with his family a few day showing that they love and take care each other very much. I wish I could have such a happiness family in the future

Come back to my presentation with the topic of What is Free and Open Source Software in the Clogger Submit organized by clogger team, and KhmerOS is one of funder to the event. I felt a bit fear because I have to do presentation in English and the audience both Cabodian and foreigner and I just learned in the detail about the history and what is FOSS, before the presentation start a few day before. But on the day of presentation I was told to do presentation in Khmer language, I started to feel warm because I thinked they were my students but still difficult because I am not good at talking. Here is my slide. The event was similar to Asia source II because of the organizer is one of Asia source II participants. I think it’s a good event of sharing knowledge that people can learn and know-how the new technology enable normal user to share information on the web even though they are not web developer. Cambodian should learn and do it especially in Khmer language to enrich online resource for all Cambodian who don’t speak English very well.

MC comes from the word Master of Ceremony, This word I know by working as a Master of Ceremony one morning in the event of the Memorandum of Understanding between Ministry of Education Yourth and Sport (MoEYS) and Open Institute (OI). This event is to give understanding of Open School program established by MoEYS and Open Institute to some of the MoEYS officials and to sign the agreement of Open School program between the two by minister of MoEYS and director of OI.

To day I have sent mail to my colleage with attachment but I forget to attach the file when I send my mail, Kmail warn me to attach the file.. see how clever it is!
